Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) Property

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is a commonly used food additive, its sodium salt (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose) used as a viscosity agent, a paste.
Carboxymethyl cellulose is called industrial monosodium glutamate, widely used in industrial production, the use of enormous value to the various production areas. Carboxymethyl cellulose is a powdery substance, non-toxic, but it is easily dissolved in water, are soluble in cold water hot water, but insoluble in organic solvents, become viscous liquids after dissolution, but because of the temperature of the viscous is increased and decreased. Because of its special properties, so there are a lot of special requirements in storage and transportation.

1.Physical and chemical properties

Sodium carboxymethylcellulose (Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose), is a cellulose carboxymethyl ether sodium salt. Chemical name Sodium salt of carboxymethyl ether of cellulose, cellulose acetate alias (Sodium cellulose glycolate), Na CMC, CMC, viscose (Cellulose Gum), INS No. 466, CAS number 9004-32-4.

Molecular formula:
 , (n is the degree of polymerization, x = 1.50 ~ 2.80, y = 0.2 ~ 1.50, x + y = 3.0, y = degree of substitution Degree of Substitution )
MW: When the degree of substitution of 0.2, a molecular weight of 178.14; when the degree of substitution of 1.5 and a molecular weight of 282.18; polymeric molecular weight of about 17,000 (n about 100).
Appearance: white or yellowish, odorless, tasteless, hygroscopic particles, silt or fine fibrous.

2.Manufacturing procedures

Cellulose, such as wool, cotton, degreasing, bleaching, basified with sodium hydroxide treatment becomes alkali cellulose. Reaction of alkali cellulose with monochloroacetic acid, then get sodium carboxymethyl cellulose.
